Course owners: overview
By default, the person who creates the course is the course owner. The course owner's name appears in the store, and they are the default instructor to receive learner messages.
A course owner is not a user type: anyone who can create courses can own courses. Each course has only 1 owner at a time.
This role is mainly associated with instructors who create course content. See User types and permissions: instructors.
The course owner has specific course-related tasks. By default, owners:
- receive notifications about course events like learners completing exams and surveys
- receive assignments, if no other instructor is assigned to the learner
The person who created the course is the first course owner. An admin or a course owner can change the course owner as required. The new course owner must have permissions to create and edit courses.
Access permissions
- Admins: can create and edit courses
- Instructors, with permissions turned on: can create and edit courses
- Managers with instructor permissions: can create and edit courses
See:
- Portal setup: create admin accounts
- Users: create an instructor, and assign them to a course
- Managers: set permissions to manage groups
Find a course’s owner
The course’s current owner, and the option to change the owner, is available for each course from the course’s Additional Settings. See Courses: Additional Settings to manage learners' access to a course.
To find the course owner for multiple courses, download your portal’s course settings. See Courses: export course settings from a portal.
For organizations that use the LearnUpon API, see Courses in LearnUpon API guide.
Change a course owner
You change the course owner through a course’s Additional Settings. See Courses: Additional Settings to manage learners' access to a course.
Course owners and notifications
By default, course owners get notifications about course events if no instructors are assigned to the course or the learner.
If instructors are assigned to the course or learner, the notifications go to the instructors instead.
For a list of automated emails that inform course owners about course events, see Standard LearnUpon-generated emails: overview.
To send messages directly to course owners, see Send a message or an announcement.
Content owners for checklists and Live Learning events
In LearnUpon, 2 module types have named owners: checklists and Live Learning events.
To create either module type, you need permissions to create and edit courses. See Access permissions in this article.
As a course owner, you can add a checklist or Live Learning event with a different owner to your course. You do not need to own the checklist or ILT, in order to use these modules in your course.
This modular structure means you can add any checklists and Live Learning events available in your portal to your courses.
Checklists
The person who created the checklist is the default owner. Checklists have a single owner, that you can't change or transfer.
See Checklists - create a checklist and add it to a course.
Events from Live Learning
The person who created the event is the default owner. These modules require at least 1 owner. You can change the owner, or add more owners to the module.
If a training owner is deleted from the portal or their user type is changed through the application, LearnUpon displays a notification about their modules, and a dialog to select a new owner for the modules.
If these changes happen through the API, where there's no option to select a new owner, the oldest admin in the portal becomes the default owner for the modules.
See Live Learning: create and edit an ILT module.
