Deliver a smooth and learner-focused course experience
LearnUpon's interface for learners taking courses makes courses easy to start, progress through, and finish with confidence.

This interface design works smoothly on mobile devices and tablets. The accessible features can deliver content with screen readers and assistive technology.

Navigation within the course
Top navigation
Breadcrumbs in the top navigation include module types and names, to tell learners where they are in a course. Selecting the course name breadcrumb returns learners to Course details.
Bottom navigation
Previous module, Next module and Complete buttons are positioned in the lower navigation area directing learners to move between modules, or to finish the module.
Side navigation
The side navigation includes:
- an option to collapse the sidebar, to give the course content more space on the page
- the course name links to Course details
- Exit leads to the learner's point of entry to the course: Course details, Home, or an external location
- a progress bar and percentage indicates how far learners have progressed through the course
- radio buttons with module names indicate where learners are in the course. As learners progress through the course, the buttons fill in with colour and a checkmark to show completion
- for course content that requires review like an assignment, the radio button shows a Pending status
- Message instructor is available by default onscreen. Course owners can turn off this option in the course's Additional settings
Note: setting up links to external locations, aka outside the LearnUpon portal, requires settings in your external software. See Portal: set up redirects to and from courses.
Unsequenced courses show radio buttons in the original display order. Learners can select the modules to complete them in any order.
Sequenced courses show connections between the radio buttons, and learners need to complete the modules in the specified order. See Courses: sequence your modules.
The following screenshot highlights the navigation controls for a course with sequenced modules, that is open on its first module.
Exams and knowledge checks
Within a course, graded exams and non-graded knowledge checks are easy to distinguish from each other with labelling and cues. The settings for the exam are laid out clearly, available before starting the exam.

The following screenshot shows the start page for a graded exam, where the score counts towards passing the course.
After the exam, the exam summary makes the outcome clear and easy to understand at a glance, and provides any options included in the exam, such as the option to try again.
Knowledge checks, where the score does not count towards the course result, are labelled to distinguish them from exams. The following screenshot shows an example knowledge check start page.
After completing a knowledge check, the learner gets a summary of the results and a reminder that the knowledge check doesn’t affect the course results. The following screenshot shows a sample knowledge check summary.
Surveys
Surveys are labelled to indicate if they are required to complete the course.
The following screenshot shows the cover page for a short survey and indicates its requirements and conditions.
Completion experience
When learners finish a course they receive clear messages to indicate the outcome.
At a minimum they see a congratulations message for a successful result. The following screenshot shows the completion message and Exit course.
Depending on your portal settings, learners also see:
- any new learning badges. See Gamification overview: plan levels and badges
- any certificates associated with the course. Learners can download their certificates or share them immediately to LinkedIn and X (formerly Twitter). See Set up course and learning path certificates

Any certificates and badges also appear on Content details, where learners can see the course content they completed, and an option to download the certificate.
