Tailor training based on your learners' data
Build a learning journey with course content that matches your learners' needs.
Availability: all customers
See Learning Journeys: overview and features to learn about the learning journeys canvas and the logic tools available.
You can use up to 100 nodes (Enroll, Branch, Delay/Schedule or Award) per learning journey.
Use multi-course nodes to group courses together, when a specific order of courses is not required, or when you offer learners some choice of courses.
Add branches to set a specific order for courses, so the previous course completion is required to progress, or to assign a certificate at the end of a journey.
Use delay/schedule nodes to manage the pace of enrollments, or to control access to courses where enrollments are limited.
Set awards for completing parts of the journey or the whole journey.
Prerequisites
To make use of learning journeys you need an active portal that includes:
- custom user data, particularly String and String-Choice fields, to provide conditions for your learners
- published courses for learners to join
- certificates to add to completed journeys
Note: learn how to set up and edit String-Choice fields, to understand what data you can and cannot change while custom user data is in use by learning journeys.
See Custom user data: set up custom fields
Access permissions
All admins: can create and publish learning journeys, and enroll and unenroll learners
Managers with correct permissions:
- can enroll and unenroll learners
- can view the journeys that allow managers to enroll and unenroll learners

Draft, save and publish a learning journey
New Learning Journey is the default name for every new journey. When you edit the name you can enter a description: both the name and the description are visible to your learners.
The branch names are visible to learners when they view their learning journey enrollments. Make the branch names meaningful, to suggest what the journey’s branch is about, or how the journey logic applied to them.
Set up enrollments for the journey
- From main navigation go to Learning Journeys > + New journey to open the journey canvas, with START, a decision node marked by a plus sign, and END marked out.
- Select the decison node to access journey options. For the first node, typically you select one of Enroll, Branch or Delay/Schedule.
- For Enroll:
- enter a Title and Description: these entries appear in the published journey canvas, and also appear to learners.
- from Select course(s): use the menu, or enter search terms to find one or more course(s). Any certificates associated with the course appear automatically
- select Add criteria to define the course completion requirements:
- Course is required or All courses are required
- Course is optional or All courses are optional
- For multiple courses, Complete X of Y courses. This option prompts you to enter the number of courses to complete
- Save criteria.
- Save to finish the enrollment node.
The following screenshot shows Enroll on course for one course with the Title, Description and Course criteria completed, before selecting Save.
The following screenshot shows an example of enrollment criteria for multiple courses, where learners must complete 2 out of 3 courses.
Set up branches, schedules and awards for the journey
- From main navigation go to Learning Journeys > your draft journey to open the journey canvas.
- Select the decision node > Branch to build conditions based on custom user data, or previous course outcomes. Add branches to:
- direct learners to specific courses based on their custom user data like location, team, job title or other data you provide
- set a specific order for courses: the previous course completion is required to progress
- assign a certificate at the end of a journeyAdd branches to set a specific order for courses, so the previous course completion is required to progress, or to assign a certificate at the end of a journey
- Select the decision node > Delay/Schedule: schedule progress of the courses around the enrollment in the previous course, completion of the previous course, or a fixed calendar date.
- Edit nodes as required. For each node include a meaningful title, and Save to add the results to the learning journey.
- Repeat the process as required, to build a branching journey with a series of courses, with conditions that determine the next step for learners.
- As required, select Award to add a certificate to a branch.
- Enter a name and description for the learning journey and Save.
- Review the learning journey: check each node and course result.
- When the learning journey is complete, select Publish. The canvas changes so you can see each condition and the progression of courses.
When published, the journey displays the Title and Description you entered for each node, on the journey canvas and to learners. The following screenshot shows the learners' view of the Enroll node.
Manage the learning journey settings
These settings apply to Published learning journeys only.
You can change the settings for a learning journey in Draft status, but you won't see the changes until the learning journey is Published.
You can change the settings for an existing published learning journey without starting a new version.

- From main navigation go to Learning Journeys > my learning journey.
- From the navigation bar select More options (aka the 3-dot menu) > Settings.
- Select a setting to turn it on for the learning journey:
- Email notifications: Enable enrollment and completion emails for this journey
- Permissions: Manager can enroll and unenroll
- Catalog: display learning journey in the catalog
- Save to finish.
The following screenshot shows a sample learning journey Settings with the notifications and the catalog settings selected.
