OpenSesame: overview
OpenSesame holds the content
OpenSesame offers access to ready-made SCORM modules so you can build courses and publish them quickly.
The SCORM content is hosted by OpenSesame. Learners access the course content through an iFrame in their LearnUpon portal. Any interactions within the course like voting, responding to questions, or flagging go to OpenSesame.
When the learner closes the SCORM, LearnUpon receives the lmsFinish SCORM response which tells LearnUpon whether the module is In Progress, or is Complete.
When the course content changes in OpenSesame, the updates are available immediately in your course in LearnUpon.
Note: when OpenSesame updates the metadata for a course, the integration synchronizes metadata automatically overnight. These metadata updates overwrite any custom text added within LearnUpon.
What you see in LearnUpon
LearnUpon supports up to 5,000 active OpenSesame courses at a time within each portal. If you download more than this number of courses from OpenSesame, you must remove some courses from your OpenSesame library that you no longer use.
When you import courses from your OpenSesame Lists, they appear as SCORM modules in the portal library with title, description, duration, and course images.
In the portal library you see only the courses you have imported. To access all OpenSesame courses, log in to access the OpenSesame catalog, or your OpenSesame Lists.
Course descriptions includes a list of the course's available languages. When the course is available in more than 1 language, learners choose their language when starting the course.
Decommissioned courses
If OpenSesame decommissions a course, the course owner gets 60 days notice by email. The notification lists the course name, any additional courses which use the SCORM module, and any learning paths that include the course. LearnUpon advises admins to:
- unenroll any learners with Not Started status
- encourage learners with In Progress statuses to complete the course as soon as possible
When OpenSesame decommissions the course, the course appears as Archived in LearnUpon. Any learners in the In Progress status can complete the course, even when it appears Archived.
Auto-synchonization for current OpenSesame customers
For current OpenSesame customers: as soon as you connect, OpenSesame starts importing all content from your OpenSesame List to your portal.
If you manually uploaded OpenSesame courses in your portal, the integration synchronizes your manual uploads with its library, and updates the course metadata to match the OpenSesame version.
Warning: depending on how many OpenSesame courses you have active, this sync can take some hours. Schedule this integration setup to allow for synchonization time.
Archiving OpenSesame content in your portal
When you archive a course in your portal that contains OpenSesame content, enrolled learners can complete their course and keep their completion history.
See Archive a course
As long as you have OpenSesame course content within your portal, OpenSesame continues to synchronize it overnight - even those courses with Archived status in LearnUpon.
To prevent OpenSesame from re-importing or updating course content you're no longer using, remove the course from your selected list of delivered courses in OpenSesame.
OpenSesame licenses are for individual portals only
You cannot copy OpenSesame content, or set up a LearnUpon license to a sub-portal for a course containing OpenSesame content.
You can set up a sub-portal with a separate OpenSesame license to access the same course content.
Tip: you can set up a "shell" course to act as a template for copied courses, and add the OpenSesame content to the shell in the sub-portal.
Access permissions
OpenSesame subscription required
Your organization requires a subscription to OpenSesame to use this integration.
- Admins with full portal permissions: can set up OpenSesame integration
The LearnUpon admin who sets up the integration requires an OpenSesame administrator account. During first-time setup, the admin confirms agreement with the governing policies.
This integration is available for both top-level and sub-portals.
Using OpenSesame courses
The admin who imports the courses is listed as course owner.
Once the course is available in LearnUpon, you can treat it like any other course, with the same permissions requirements. For a manager to enroll learners in a OpenSesame course, you need to:
- let the manager’s account enroll learners - see Managers: set permissions to manage groups
- set the course-level permissions to let managers enroll - see Courses: Additional settings to manage learners' access to a course
For instructors to enroll learners in a OpenSesame course, instructors must be either the course owner, or an instructor on the course. See Users: create an instructor, and assign them to a course.
You can change the course owner, if required. See Courses: Additional settings to manage learners' access to a course.
Prerequisites
For the integration's one-time setup, each portal requires a separate Customer Integration ID from OpenSesame.
Request this unique identifier from your OpenSesame Integration Specialist, for each portal.
Add OpenSesame integration to your portal: one time setup
- From main navigation go to Settings > Integrations > Content Integration.
- Select OpenSesame.
- From OpenSesame content, select Connect.
- In Connect to OpenSesame confirmation dialog, review the agreement reminder and select Accept and connect.
- In Connect OpenSesame dialog, enter the Customer Integration ID and select Connect.
LearnUpon displays a confirmation message.
Repeat these steps for each portal, with its own Customer Integration ID.
Send courses from OpenSesame to your portal
Once the integration is active, you can send courses to your LearnUpon portal.
From the OpenSesame site, log in as an admin to access your licensed courses.
Follow the instructions from OpenSesame's Support:
- OpenSesame Support: how to send courses to a learning platform using a List
- OpenSesame Support: how to use OpenSesame Lists
LearnUpon is not responsible for content off this website.
Disconnect the OpenSesame integration
When you disconnect the integration, learners lose access to the OpenSesame course content, even if the learners are enrolled and at In progress status.
For the smoothest transition, LearnUpon recommends you archive the courses containing OpenSesame content and allow learners to complete the courses before disconnecting the integration.
- From main navigation go to Settings > Integrations > Content Integrations.
- Select OpenSesame.
- From OpenSesame content, select Disconnect.
- In the confirmation dialog that opens select Disconnect.
